As we are all aware, CoronaVirus has created havoc worldwide in 2020.  Unfortunately this has affected businesses everywhere.  This virus is highly contagious and high traffic and air conditioned areas are prone due to the virus aerosol transmission capabilities that keep it floating in tiny air droplets in the air for up to 4 hours and up to 5 days on some surface types.  While conventional cleaners such as alcohol based and chemical disinfectants have proven effective on surfaces, the risk is still high due to air born droplets and particles containing the virus.

ABOUT ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation that comes from the sun and man-made sources like tanning beds and welding torches.

UV radiation is divided into 3 main groups:

• UVA rays have the least energy among UV rays.

• UVB rays have slightly more energy than UVA rays. They can damage the DNA in skin cells directly, and are the main rays that cause sunburns. They are also thought to cause most skin cancers.

• UVC rays have more energy than the other types of UV rays. UV-C light is what's used by sanitizers to kill or inactivate microorganisms by destroying and disrupting their nucleic acids.  So if the device is properly tested and properly used, it works to kill pathogens -- but something that powerful also has the potential to harm our skin. It can cause burns and is a known carcinogen. Care should be taken to avoid exposure to the skin and eyes. These devices are not designed to be used to disinfect the skin and can be dangerous if used improperly.​

The sanitizing effects of UV lights have been seen with other coronaviruses, including the one that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Studies have shown that it can be used against other coronaviruses. One study found at least 15 minutes of UVC exposure inactivated SARS, making it impossible for the virus to replicate. New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority announced the use of UV light on subway cars, buses, technology centers, and offices.
